What goes into your mind when you lose your mobile phone? That's what happened to me more than 2 months ago. My beloved HTC Touch Pro was stolen in the middle of the night through the window. My first reaction was to wonder if I had misplaced it. But after a couple of hours of panicking, searching and thinking, I concluded that it was really stolen.

Next, I started to worry about the valuable data that I have lost, especially since I did not password-lock my device. I worried about files that have not been backup for a long time, especially the contents on my Storage Card. I also worried if I have any confidential data that are not protected though most of the confidential data (passwords, etc) are stored in eWallet file that is password-protected. I also worried about saved passwords in Opera Mobile, Pocket Outlook mail accounts, etc. And lastly, it's also the pain of losing an expensive device which I spent S$1000+ on. The cost of the device and the data is quite a pain.

Losing a phone or having it stolen can be really sad, especially for gadget enthusiasts and people who rely alot on their phones. Fortunately, there is something we can do about it. 3 years back, I did a review on Bak2U, a lost-and-found service for gadgets. Now, Bak2U has diverted their attention to their flagship product PhoneBAK, an anti-theft software for mobile phones. This is a really cool & useful software to have installed on your devices. I wished I had installed the software on my stolen phone earlier and that would have given me a chance of getting back the phone.
PhoneBAK is an anti-theft software that works on several mobile phone platforms. I think such a software is a great investment to supplement our Windows Mobile devices. At the cost of US$19.90, it doesn't hurt and most importantly, this cost is insignificant if this gives you a chance of recovering your lost/stolen mobile phone.

So how does PhoneBAK work? Basically, you need to configure a list of approved SIM cards. When an unauthorised SIM card is detected in the device, the application will send an SMS to predefined numbers silently in the background. It also gives the option of performing a hard reset or clearing the Storage Card when such an event occurs.

The software comes in a CAB file installer for Windows Mobile devices. It is compatible with all kinds of screen resolutions available for Windows Mobile at the moment. The device compatibility list can be found on their website. After installation, you will need to go to the application's installation folder to configure the software.

In the first tab within the application settings screen, you can change the password for locking the application.

In the second tab, you can add the SIM card ID into the approved list of SIM cards (the current SIM card ID in use will be suggested in the text entry box).

In the third tab, you can add a list of phone numbers to send notification SMS to when an unauthorised SIM card is in use.

In the fourth tab, you can configure the SMS settings, e.g. the text message content and frequency of the notification SMS.

In the last tab, you can choose whether you wish to perform a hard reset or clear the torage Card contents.

Well, the software is simple, useful and reasonably priced. If you are not using this software on your Windows Mobile phone and you treasure your device, what are you waiting for? Grab a copy of the software and secure your phone now. Don't wait and procrastinate like I did.
